Snowy Mountains and Tassie

This is one serious adventure, enjoy the south at the warmest time of the year (despite it potentially getting a little cold down in Tassie!)

This tour will take us from Sydney, on a two day run south across the Snowy Mountains, then down to the docks at Melbourne Port, for an overnight ferry across Bass Strait to Tasmania. Arriving in Devonport in the early hours gives us a full day of touring before settling in Launceston. The next day takes us to the north east coast through St Helens and south to Bicheno to our accommodation. Seeing penguins come in to roost on the beach at night here is a site to remember.

From there we can access Coles Bay and the Freycinet Peninsula. There’s so much hereto do you’ll need 2 days to fit it all in. Two days later we arrive at the penal colony of Port Arthur, for a comprehensive look at this historic site. Then it’s on to Hobart for 3 days to visit the Salamanca Markets, the controversial MONA Museum, Mount Wellington and Bruny Island. After Hobart we take off for the rugged west coast via Queenstown to Strahan for 2 nights visiting the Macquarie Harbour Historic Site and the magnificent wilderness, on a Gordon River cruise. Next it’s off to rugged Cradle Mountain and beautiful Dove Lake. There’s plenty of walking here if you’re feeling up to it.

The next day we’re off to Historic Stanley before heading back to Devonport to board the overnight Ferry, back to Melbourne. With an early disembarkation we have all day to slowly make our way along the remarkable Great Ocean Road to Port Campbell, our accommodation for the night. The next day will be our second last, with one more overnight stay on the way back into Sydney.

Best time to travel is from November to March as it gets very cold in Tasmania from May to September.
